9:21Now PlayingVeronica Guerrero and Tara Fugate, AFLCIO Union Summer interns, are live from the "die-in" at The Gap on Connecticut Ave. NW in Washington, DC as part of June 29's international day of action to end death traps--garment factories like the ones at Rana Plaza in Bangladesh--organized by United Students Against Sweatshops, Sum of Us, and AFL-CIO. Veronica and Tara are prepared for arrest, but they don't believe it will come to that. Although they are both college students, Veronica and Tara understand the importance of the labor movement and believe that all Americans who care about the middle class and economic security have a stake in its success. The AFL-CIO's Union Summer Intern program pays college students a living wage to learn organizing skills. Veronica and Tara are working with Molly McGrath, International Campaigns Coordinator and a veteran organizer in the US and Turkey, on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), a trade deal being negotiated between the US, Canada and the European Union. The US labor movement is hoping to leverage TTIP to bring some of the EU's labor regulations and rights to American workers.
