But what about gay seniors who have not had the benefits of societal recognition of their partnerships for decades now? Laurie Young, outgoing Director of Aging and Economic Security for the Gay and Lesbian Task Force shares her joy upon hearing the DOMA ruling and what it means for older gay and lesbian Americans. LGBT seniors are more likely to be economically insecure in old age, in no small part because they have been denied the financial benefits of federally recognized marriage, specifically for tax write-offs and Social Security spouses and survivors benefits. The DOMA ruling rights this wrong for newly married couples, but it is not clear how it will affect people retroactively.
