He claimed that Colonel Sanders, the mascot for KFC, never faced backlash for using the slur. Since then, Schnatter has apologized but said people took it out of context. In March 2019, basketball legend Shaquille O'Neal became the first Black person to serve on Papa John's Board of Directors. He also appeared in advertisements for the brand.
