Dr. Hebert on alleviating vaccine skepticism with clinical trials for children

Questions of skepticism in vaccinations are now compounded with the announcement of children as young as six months old are being included in the upcoming Moderna trial.

“The interesting thing that the African American community we have been a group of people who have gotten the highest vaccination rates in the country even in urban areas for our children,” says BNC Chief Medical Editor, Corey Hebert.

Historically the Black community has been “very good” when it comes to the vaccination of children against common diseases that have come through the Black genome.

“Diseases like measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, whooping cough all these things. I personally think that we will see an uptick in children after the vaccine is approved for children,” he added about possibilities of increasing enrollment of children into receiving vaccinations.

Dr. Hebert, who also owns a clinical trial center says a great deal of the skepticism comes from an earned sense of distrust in the medical profession as well as involvement in the conversation.

“Because we were all at home, because we were all on the edges of our seats, because we were watching television all day, we were a part of the process but not a lot of people understand the process.”

Hebert highlights the importance of understanding the process that may influence a person's perception of the vaccine going forward and is confident that the Black community will continue to increase its rates when considering a Covid vaccination.
