Recent polls indicate that former presidential candidate Andrew Yang is in the lead, followed by Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, a 22-year veteran of the New York City Police Department. Adams joined "Start Your Day" with Sharon Reed and Mike Hill to discuss the mayoral race and his career. He said he has been fighting for reform and it's been an "up and down journey." Citing the need for changes to public safety in cities like Los Angeles, New York and Atlanta, he said the changes can't be emotional. "Police officers are responding to too many jobs that they shouldn't," he said. When talking about the make-up of police departments, Adams said Black people are not encouraged to go into law enforcement. "We can really start redefining what I call the ecosystem of public safety," he said. "You change systems from outside and inside."
