Linda Berry Mallory, daughter of the late Merdine Berry, spoke with BNC about the family’s annual tradition of celebrating Juneteenth. “My mother would hold a Juneteenth celebration and it was free to all,” Berry said. The 100-acre land was temporarily lost by her mother before the case was brought to the U.S Supreme Court to be fought to regain ownership. Berry’s great-great-grandparents who originally owned this land were free slaves. The annual event is a reminder of how slaves were cheated out of freedom.
The family looks forward to the annual event and will continue to shed light on the heritage of the land.
