7:05Now PlayingThe CROWN Act, which stands for Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair, prohibits discrimination based on hair style and texture.
According to research, Black women are 80% more likely than white women to agree that they need to change their hair from its natural form to fit in at work. “For me, I think the importance of teaching our young girls that this is the way God made you, no one should discriminate against you because of the texture,” Mali Hunter, president and founder of The Retnuh Agency, shared with Lauren McCoy on “Start Your Day.” “The way that we wear our hair is important, it’s just like putting on your clothes. It’s a representation of how you feel today.” There are still 37 states that allow for hair style and texture discrimination among women of color.
