10:00Now PlayingDavid “Dope Educator” Jamison and his Hickory Ridge Elementary School students from Memphis have officially “made it,” appearing as the stars in a GAP advertisement campaign.
Jamison and his fifth grade student joined “Start Your Day” co-hosts Mike Hill and Sharon Reed to discuss their journey to the small screen. They started gaining attention about two years ago, when the personalized handshakes he shared with each student went viral. Jamison shared that he and his best friend of more than 20 years had a secret handshake that set them apart from everyone else. That was all the motivation he needed. "When I became an educator, I understood that I have 75 new best friends,” he said. “So, my whole purpose was just to build that trust with them, letting them know that they are appreciated, letting them know that they are valued and letting them know that they can trust me.” James noted that some of his students come from underserved communities, so the campaign really helped their families financially amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
