Now, lawmakers are prioritizing extending the federal student loan relief plan as it expires on Sept. 30. Getting rid of student debt was one of President Biden’s campaign promises that appealed to people such as Black voters.
According to data from the National Center for Education Statistics, Black college graduates owe $25,000 more than white graduates. At least 20 HBCUs have forgiven more than $60 million in student balances by using a mix of pandemic relief and private donations.
