McMillan says when looking at the involvement of young people since the beginning of time, they’ve always been at the forefront of the movement. “Young people understand our power in this moment,” said McMillan. “And we understand in order for us achieve the goals, whether we’re talking about student debt cancellation, college affordability, police accountability, and how we want climate change, these things come with the access to the ballot.” McMillan believes it’s important to understand the times we are in and utilize the tools and resources, such as social media. In terms of whether this is “our fight,” McMillan says he doesn’t want his children’s children fighting for the same things he is today. For communities of color, who have so long been denied access, McMillan says the key is to not become complacent, but keep the spirit of optimism and realism.
