He challenged his sentencing in the U.S. 4th District Circuit Court of Appeals. In 2017, Roof was the first person in America sentenced to death for a federal hate crime. His attorneys argued that he was wrongfully allowed to represent himself and suffered from mental health issues not revealed to the jury. Roof remains on death row in Indiana.
