3:22Now PlayingHurricane Ida is gathering strength in the Gulf of Mexico and has forced evacuations across New Orleans.
BNC meteorologist Brittany Lockley says the storm is becoming better organized as it crosses the Gulf and should intensify over the next 24 hours, expected to reach at least Category 4 strength before making landfall around lunchtime Sunday. The cause of the storm reaching Category 4 is sea surface temperatures and warm waters, which gives it time to grow and strengthen since there’s no land to be interacted with.
Ida is expected to reach 110 mph winds along the coast line as we head into Sunday and could reach 140 mph winds. Storm surge warnings are in effect, which Lockley says is a big deal when it comes to Louisiana. “This is a very dangerous storm and I cannot say it enough, if you are on the coast line and even if you are in New Orleans, it is time to evacuate,” says Lockley.
