Louisiana Emergency Management Talks Hurricane Ida

Mike Steele, communications director for the Louisiana Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, shares Hurricane Ida updates with BNC’s Laverne McGee.

Since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Steele says improvements have been made to strengthen the levees in and around New Orleans. He notes that his agency didn’t even exist at the time of Katrina, and the coordination and training between government agencies and federal partners have all improved since then. “It’s a situation where every event that people go through, you basically learn from those events,” says Steele. “Even if you have an emergency where everything goes relatively well, there’s still lessons you can learn, and Katrina was a landmark event for everyone in the emergency management field and I don’t think we will ever see things like it was back then and there’s a lot more in place now to kind of protect the public.”
