The Taliban used to run Afghanistan before being pushed out in 2001. Since the withdrawal of the final combat troops on Monday was hasty and not executed in the best of ways, Boyd says the issue now is what to do with the Afghans that were left there. “The promises made and promises broken I think is the emotional state of all of us right now because he said he’d leave no one behind,” Boyd says, adding that we didn’t negotiate “in the hard way” with the Taliban since the troops’ withdrawal it felt like a forced choice. While the Taliban is “happy” to have foreign intervention out, their actions could cause President Joe Biden or any future administration to come in and invade once again.
