6:47Now PlayingLAPD officers have been directed to collect social media handles for every citizen they interview, according to documents obtained by the Brennan Center for Justice, a nonprofit law and public policy institute.
Officers are instructed to complete field interview cards that record civilians' Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts and their basic biographical information, even if they are not under arrest or accused of a crime.
While leadership within the LAPD has expressed that social media and biographical information is necessary for arrests, investigations and prosecutions, the practice has raised privacy concerns among activists. It’s been speculated the department uses this information for “predictive policing” and target tracks specific individuals suspected of being gang members or activists.
