The Patriot Act was passed 45 days after the attacks, and the fear of terrorism was used to justify surveillance and overpolicing of Black, Brown and Muslim American communities.
Officials have used 9/11 to justify several human rights and civil liberties violations and are spending large amounts of money on surveillance techniques.
Jennifer Granick, surveillance and cybersecurity counsel for the ACLU’s Speech, Privacy and Technology Project, joins Yodit Tewolde on “Making the Case” to discuss this issue.
