as posted by the channelOn this day in Black history, Alain Locke, curator of the “The Harlem Renaissance,” was born in 1855.
He rose to become a key figure in what was known as the "New Negro Movement." Locke’s most groundbreaking effort came in the form of an anthology titled "The New Negro."
"The New Negro," published in 1925, was a collection of poems, plays, music, short stories, essays and portraitures along with Locke's cultural commentary. The book changed the conversation about what it meant to be Black in the United States, from problem to asset. As a queer man, he also embodied how integral gay men and women were to the Harlem Renaissance.
“It was Locke who ushered in the idea of appreciating Black artists for creatively sharing the Black experience with the mainstream,” said Charles Blow.
