9:12Now Playing2011 MacArthur "Genius" fellow and a professor of history at Harvard University, Dr. Tiya Miles, has written a powerful book called, “All That She Carried: The Journey of Ashley's Sack, a Black Family Keepsake.”
It is about an enslaved mother in 1850 South Carolina. She has a nine-year old daughter Ashley, who was forcibly taken from her. She put together a few personal items in a cotton bag and handed it to Ashley. After so many years, herself a grandmother, Ashley passes that sack to her granddaughter, Ruth.
Dr. Miles joins Shannon LaNier on “Black News Tonight” to discuss the book.
