Sickle cell is a blood disorder that affects the flow of red blood cells, and it impacts one in 13 Black people. Symptoms for those with the disease include anemia, dark urine, yellow eyes, pain and swelling in the feet and hands and lack of growth development. Montgomery says it was scary when he first found out he had the sickle trait and he questioned whether he would be able to pay football, but he praises his trainers and doctors for educating him and keeping him in good health and faith. Raising awareness about sickle cell disease is a key initiative of the Black Women's Health Imperative (BWHI), a non-profit that puts health and wellness at its core.
