2:37Now PlayingFollowing a year of protests over police policies and procedures, many police departments across the country are seeing a decline in the number of Black officers on the force.
BNC correspondent Jenyne Donaldson reports live from Charlotte and says Black and Brown police officers are essential in communities across the country, particularly in Black communities where distrust against police is high. She added officers are retiring, and recruitment efforts need to change. Data from local departments shows a 14% decrease in Black officers from 2008 to 2020 in the NYPD. In Chicago, the number dropped 12% since 2019. Donaldson says getting an actual number of changes nationally is nearly impossible because there are more than 18,000 police departments in the U.S., but the “trend is more clear” looking at major cities.
