10:59Now PlayingMore than 159 million Americans exercised their right to vote in the 2020 presidential election but voting rights advocate Desmond Meade is fighting to make sure at least 5.2 million more can do so next go round.
Millions of Americans couldn't vote because of laws that don't allow people with felony convictions to do so, with 1.4 million of those individuals being in Florida alone. Meade, who served prison time for drug and firearm offenses, used to be one of them. He’s since started an organization called the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, restoring voting rights to those with prior felony convictions, as long as they paid any outstanding fines or fees.
As for Meade himself, all of his civil rights were restored five days ago, thanks to the Florida Board of Executive Clemency. He joins “Making the Case” host Yodit Tewolde to discuss his journey.
