2:21Now PlayingPlessy v. Ferguson was a decision many call the “worst Supreme Court decision in history.”
It was a landmark ruling that said that racial segregation laws did not contradict the United States Constitution as long as accommodations provided for each race were equal in quality.
In 1892, Homer Plessy purchased a first-class train ticket and sat in a car designated for white passengers only. After refusing to give up his seat, Plessy was arrested, then convicted and fined $25.
He appealed the decision all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Today, the Louisiana Board of Pardons unanimously approved a pardon for Plessy, and it will be sent to Gov. John Bel Edwards for final approval.
