The bill measure was passed on Dec. 9 and if there are no legal challenges, it would go into effect in 2023.
This progress is against the backdrop of the Republican right-wing party resisting all voting rights efforts and plans to challenge every election where Black and Brown people turn out to vote.
“Voting is considered to be one of the most fundamental rights we have as Americans. A right that is slowly being turned into a privilege. Being heard by society, being counted is a privilege of those who are citizens,” Nayyera Haq said.
