2:11Now PlayingSometime in 1819, Ben Montgomery was born into slavery. he was later sold to Joseph Davis, older brother of Jefferson Davis.
Joseph Davis would place Montgomery in charge of his general store. Eventually, he oversaw all purchasing and shipping activities on the plantation at Davis Bend, Mississippi. Montgomery ran these operations while he was enslaved.
Over his lifetime, he would develop a wide range of skills from reading and writing to land surveying and architectural design. A formidable mechanic, his most notable invention was a steam-operated propeller that would allow boats to travel in shallow water. This was a game changer in an era dependent on transportation by riverboat.
