7:02Now PlayingThe very word prayer for a lot of us conjures up all kinds of ideas we got growing up. Many of us associate ‘prayer’ as a whole with petitionary prayer–asking God for stuff. But authentic relationship with God involves much more. To quote Saint Augustine, “Prayer is an exercise in desire.”
That’s what prayer is, in its very essence.
One of my favorite quotes on prayer comes from Pope Benedict XVII: He says, expanding this idea, “The Fathers of the Church tell us that prayer is nothing other than becoming a longing for God.” This means that if we are to learn how to pray, we have to get in touch with the Ache–we have to get in touch with the deepest cry of our hearts and learn how to open it, just as we experience it, to the Love of our Creator.
