Hedge funds and mutual funds: what exactly are they and should you trade them?

Mutual funds invest in a big basket of stocks. When you buy a mutual fund you’re investing in 50–100 stocks. But investing in multiple stocks doesn’t necessarily make mutual funds safer — it’s all a marketing facade.

Hedge funds are mutual funds on steroids. They can bet on big groups of stocks ... But they can also short sell and bet against assets. Theoretically you can do better because you’re long some and short some. Hedge funds come with more risk than mutual funds, but they can also be more flexible.

Mutual funds and hedge funds are great if you’re lazy or if you trust other people with your money. They’re not geared toward making money but toward accumulating assets instead. Personally, I don’t want to let someone else manage my money. I don’t trust anyone.
