Extremely Intoxicated Woman Crashes Into a Bridge at Almost 5 TIMES LEGAL LIMIT

On November 30, 2023 around 2:30 PM, Patrolman Michael O’Mealy with the Chester Township Police Department was dispatched to the scene of a motor vehicle accident involving a 2020 Volvo that had crashed into a bridge over the Black River on Ironia Road. He arrived on scene around 2:34 PM and noticed that the Volvo’s passenger side tire had fallen off the vehicle after it crashed into the bridge. The airbags had not deployed and the sole occupant of the vehicle was still inside. He made contact with the driver, who was identified as Kira.

Kira told Patrolman O’Mealy that she was distracted by looking at her phone and that she thought her license was suspended due to a prior DWI. As he was speaking with Kira, he detected the odor of alcohol and noticed other signs of impairment. Patrolman Brian Lowry arrived on scene to assist around 2:44 PM. Based on her apparent head injuries, the officers decided that it would not be safe to administer field sobriety exercises.

After she was evaluated by first responders, Kira was informed that she was being placed under arrest and that she would be taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Kira signed a consent form agreeing to a blood draw inside the ambulance rig. A consensual blood draw was administered at Morristown Medical Center and she was subsequently released to her husband pending her court appearance in the Chester Township Municipal Court.

Her blood test results would later indicate a BAC level of 0.373% at the time of the blood draw, so her BAC level may have been around 5 times the legal limit of 0.08% at the time of the crash. Patrolman O’Mealy issued her the following summonses: Operating under the influence, reckless driving, careless driving, traffic on marked lanes, use of hand-held wireless telephones, driving after driver’s license suspended/revoked, failure to possess driver registration, failure to possess driver insurance card, driving without a license, open container, and consuming an alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle

Court records indicate that on February 9, 2023, Kira had previously been arrested for another DWI in Boonton Township, New Jersey after fleeing the scene of an accident.

Super. 13, the Appellate Division of the Superior Court has also affirmed the right to film law enforcement interactions.
