Woman Arrested for SECOND DWI After 3-Car Crash

Around 12:06 AM on August 28, 2022, Officers Arthur Gant, Edward Rilho, Brianna Marchetti, and Sergeant Kyle Boturla with the Point Pleasant Beach Police Department were dispatched to the scene of a 3-car crash on Route 35 South near the intersection with McLean Avenue. The three vehicles included a 2009 Toyota Camry, 2006 Audi, and 2017 Volkswagen Jetta. Officer Gant first made contact with the driver of the Audi while Officer Marchetti spoke with the driver of the Volkswagen. The driver of the Audi told Officer Gant that she was feeling pain as a result of the collision. She was evaluated by first responders at the scene but ultimately decided to not go to the hospital.

Sergeant Boturla spoke with the driver of the Toyota Camry, who was later identified as Julia. As he was speaking with Julia, he detected the odor of alcohol and observed indicators of impairment. When Officer Gant spoke with Julia, she told him that she had left her aunt’s house at Rumson and that she was headed over to Lavallette. When Julia was asked if she had consumed any alcohol earlier that evening, she admitted to consuming 3 beers earlier that evening around 6:00 PM. Based on their suspicion of impairment, Julia was asked to perform field sobriety exercises.

Officer Gant started by asking her to recite the alphabet from “A” to “Z,” but she skipped the letter “G” and paused multiple times while reciting the alphabet. The second exercise was the One Leg Stand test, and Julia failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion and paused counting during the middle of the test. The third exercise was the Walk and Turn Test. During the Walk and Turn test, Julia failed to touch heel-to-toe on each step and turned improperly. Sergeant Boturla administered the final exercise, which was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, and he told Officer Gant that he detected 6/6 indicators of impairment.

Based on the motor vehicle accident, her admission to consuming alcohol earlier, and her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, Julia was placed under arrest. After Julia was placed under arrest, her vehicle was impounded for a 12-hour hold according to John’s Law. Officer Gant transported Julia to the Point Pleasant Beach Police Department for further processing. At the station, she was read the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators and refused to submit breath samples.

After they were finished processing Julia, she was placed in a cell until she could be released to someone willing to take responsibility for her. After unsuccessfully attempting to contact her numerous friends, she was eventually released to her aunt pending her court appearance after she signed the Potential Liability Warning on Julia’s behalf. Officer Gant issued Julia the following citations: Operating under the influence, refusal to submit to chemical breath testing, reckless driving, careless driving, and failure to possess driver registration

Court records indicate that Julia was previously arrested for DWI in Lakewood, New Jersey on June 28, 2020. She has a lengthy history of receiving numerous traffic citations in New Jersey which predate this DWI arrest, and Julia has also received multiple traffic tickets for driving with a suspended license in Brick Township, Lavallette, Toms River, and Brielle after this DWI arrest in Point Pleasant Beach.
