24-Year-Old Woman Cries for her Mom During DUI Arrest

On January 13, 2025 at approximately 7:37 PM, Deputies with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a report of a motor vehicle crash involving property damage in the vicinity of Long Grove Road and Quentin Road. A Deputy made contact with a female driver who was identified as 24-year-old Mia. As he was speaking with Mia, he observed indicators of impairment. Mia was later asked to exit the vehicle and perform field sobriety exercises.

The first field sobriety exercise was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test. During the Walk and Turn test, Mia did not touch heel-to-toe on each step and took an incorrect number of steps. The third exercise was the One Leg Stand test. During the One Leg Stand test, Mia failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion and put her foot down before the test was complete. Following the field sobriety exercises, Mia submitted to a PBT test, and the results indicated a BAC level of 0.226%, which was almost triple the legal limit of 0.08%.

Based on her erratic driving, her indicators of impairment, her admission to consuming alcohol, her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, and the results of the PBT, Mia was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. As she was being placed in the patrol car, she began crying hysterically and asking for her mother. The Deputy transported her to the Lake County Jail for further processing. After she was processed at the jail, Mia was released pending her court appearance.

Mia was charged with the following traffic offenses:

-Driving under the influence - alcohol (625 ILCS 5/11-501(a)(2))

-Driving under the influence - BAC .08 or more (625 ILCS 5/11-501(a)(1))

-Failure to reduce speed (625 ILCS 5/11-601(a))

-Possession of adult use cannabis in a motor vehicle (625 ILCS 5/11-502(a))
