UN Secretary-General António Guterres called on all nations who have not yet done so to ratify the Doha Amendment to the Kyoto Protocol. The appeal was made during the Secretary-General’s remarks at the opening of the High-Level Segment of the UN Climate Change Conference COP 23 in Bonn. Secretary-General Guterres reminded parties that 2017 sees the 20th anniversary year of the adoption of the Kyoto Protocol, and the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the Climate Change Convention. A total of 144 instruments of acceptance are required for the entry into force of the Doha Amendment. As of October 14, 2017, 88 parties had deposited their instrument of acceptance, while 84 countries had ratified the amendment (as of Oct. 31., 2017).
