Seattle, WA passed a city ordinance designed to promote fair housing in rentals. Under the law, a business that offered rental properties was required to rent the property to the first person that applied, assuming the person was otherwise qualified to rent.
This kind of law exists in many cities, but was a recent change in Seattle.
The Washington state Supreme Court is asked to review. Seattle argues the ordinance is proper under the Washington Constitution. And the precedent seems to support their position.
In a surprising move, Washington State's Supreme Court goes the other way. And in doing so, overrules quite a bit of precedent ....
