Diving into the mystery of the Taylor Island bombs | ABC Australia

In the late 1960s Port Lincoln abalone diver Neil Williams was diving for abalone and seashells off Taylor Island near Port Lincoln when he discovered a haul of unexploded World War 2 ammunitions.

It would take almost 50 years to pinpoint how the live fuses and mortars came to be near Port Lincoln, thousands of kilometres from war action.

Ammunitions collector Peter Wyschnja said 25 tonnes of ordnance components were dumped, some were almost all solid brass.

Divers began salvaging the pieces but then realised there was an element of danger.

Navy divers were called in to remove the bombs and send them to a deeper resting place.

All the action was captured in photographs by Navy diver Tom McNab, who would later make his home in Port Lincoln.

Mr Wyschnja has collected some of the pieces and his curiosity about the story uncovered a possible source of the mystery dumped shipment.
