Turtles of the Dampier Archipelago need wider investigations by scientists | ABC Australia

Hawksbill turtles have been the subject of ongoing scientific data capture for over 30 years in the Dampier Archipelago off the coast of North West WA.

Each year teams of volunteers and Parks & Wildlife officers camp on Rosemary Island to gather data of nesting Hawksbill turtles.

Scientists believe the archipelago is a globally significant hotspot for nesting Hawksbills.

In 2020 a 60+ year old nesting female turtle was recorded in the same location as originally captured some 30 years ago by scientists.

There are also other turtle species such as Flatbacks and Green turtles who nest on many islands in the archipelago and scientists want to extend their studies to the other islands.
