After delivering her opening statement, Laura Cooper, deputy assistant secretary of defense for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia, told House lawmakers on Nov. 20 that she had additional information to report to the House committee. During a closed-door deposition in October, Cooper said then that she only recalled a meeting in September when a Ukrainian official raised the issue of frozen U.S. aid to Ukraine. However, on Wednesday, Cooper said she has since learned from her staff about two unclassified emails they received from the State Department. The emails show that Ukraine inquired about the funds on July 25, which was the same day of the Trump-Zelensky call. Cooper said she didn't receive either email or was made aware of their content at the time. Cooper testified on Nov. 20, in a public hearing as part of the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump. The impeachment inquiry has focused on a July 25 phone call in which Trump asked the president of Ukraine to investigate former vice president and 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.
