Rep. Adam Schiff, the chair of the House Intelligence Committee, asked additional questions about the information Laura Cooper, a deputy assistant secretary of defense, presented on Nov. 20, in a public hearing as part of the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump. After delivering her opening statement, Cooper said her staff made her aware of two unclassified emails from the State Department after giving her deposition in October that show that Ukraine inquired about the hold on military aid on July 25-- the same day Trump spoke on the phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Schiff asked for confirmation whether Cooper's staff "gleaned from those conversations that the Ukrainian Embassy was aware that there was some kind of hold on the assistance?"
"Sir, the way I would phrase it is there was some kind of an issue, yes," Cooper said. The impeachment inquiry has focused on a July 25 phone call in which Trump asked the president of Ukraine to investigate former vice president and 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.
