In his opening statement, Rep. Devin Nunes, the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, accused Democrats of blocking Republican witnesses and staging what he characterized as publicity stunts during the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump. Nunes urged Americans to look past the “assumptions” and “presumptions” being made in the probe. “This is an impeachment in search of a crime,” Nunes said ahead of testimony from Laura Cooper, a deputy assistant secretary of defense, and David Hale, the undersecretary of state for political affairs. The government officials appeared on Nov. 20, in a public hearing as part of the impeachment inquiry. The probe has focused on a July 25 phone call in which Trump asked the president of Ukraine to investigate former vice president and 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter. It seeks to determine whether Trump withheld U.S. aid to Ukraine and dangled a White House meeting in exchange for Ukraine’s agreeing to those investigations.
