Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., pushed back on the GOP’s argument that Democrats are using the impeachment procedures to oust President Donald Trump from office, and said that the impeachment trial is about the high crimes and misdemeanors he committed through his office. Jeffries cited the work Democrats have done with the president on bipartisan bills that addressed lowering health care costs and criminal justice reform. “We don’t hate this president, but we love the Constitution,” he said. “We love our democracy.” Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives in December on two articles — abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The Senate will now decide whether to convict Trump of those charges and remove him from office, or acquit him.
