0:46Now PlayingWhen asked in the presidential debate Tuesday why he believed it was appropriate to weigh in on the racial identity of his opponent based on previous remarks he had made about Vice President Kamala's identity as a Black woman, former President Donald Trump struggled to clearly articulate a response in his defense.
"I mean, I don't know, I mean all I can say is I read where [Harris] was not Black, that she put out and—I'll say that—and then I read that she was Black, and that's O.K. Either one was O.K. with me. That's up to her," Trump said.
In response, Harris said that Trump uses race to "divide us" as a country, "especially by race."
Harris and Trump met for their first and possibly only debate on Sept. 10, hosted by ABC in Philadelphia. Harris replaced President Joe Biden as the Democratic presidential nominee this summer after Biden gave a troubling debate performance in June, increasing calls for him to drop out of the race.
According to the latest PBS News/NPR/Marist poll, more than two-thirds of Americans say they will watch all or most of the debate. While many voters have already made up their minds, 14 percent of Americans say the debate will have a great impact on which candidate they choose.
