1:16Now PlayingSen. Ed Markey, D-Mass. questioned Lee Zeldin, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for director of the Environmental Protection Agency, in a confirmation hearing Thursday held by the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works.
Markey asked him if he was familiar with the conclusion from Robert F. Kennedy Jr., president-elect Trump’s pick to head the Department of Health and Human Services, who said that certain pesticides, such as glyphosate and atrazine, are “mass poisoning an entire generation of kids” in the country.
Kennedy, who has a history of promoting conspiracy theories, has drawn attention to pesticides, saying the U.S. needs to revisit its standards for these substances. Experts have said it’s an area that requires more research.
“I would welcome an opportunity to be able to read through all the science and research that is being cited to support that conclusion,” Zeldin said. “That's a review that I would need to engage in.”
Zeldin is a former congressman from New York. He left Congress in January 2023 and was among the Republicans in the House of Representatives who voted against certifying the 2020 election results. In his time in the House, he did not serve on committees that oversaw environmental policy.
