2:17Now PlayingRep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., said the prominent presence of wealthy tech leaders at President Donald Trump's second inauguration “does concern” him.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who also owns the social media platform X, attended Trump’s inauguration Monday inside the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. Trump has also met recently with philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates.
“I think the reality is they're looking out for their own business interests – in Bill Gates's case, for his own philanthropic interests. They do this, whoever is in power,” Khanna told PBS News Hour co-anchors Amna Nawaz and Geoff Bennett. “So the moral leadership is going to have to come from the grassroots of the country, from the Democratic Party. I don't think we can be looking to business leaders to be doing anything other than maximizing their own shareholder profits.”
Khanna, who represents Silicon Valley in California, said Americans will eventually see through Trump’s policies.
“Ultimately, he's selling Americans nostalgia,” Khanna said of Trump. “I understand why people are upset. They see a stagnant country. We have to sell them the future, that we really have a way of building and transforming this country.”
