WATCH: Lee questions Stefanik about UN’s relationship with International Criminal Court

Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, asked Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., on Tuesday to share her thoughts about the relationship between the United Nations and the International Criminal Court.

“Would you support a negotiation of the United Nations headquarters agreement to clarify that the UN shouldn't be housing other international organizations to which the U.S. is not a party,” Lee asked, referring to the ICC, “particularly those organizations that take positions hostile to the interests of the United States?”

“I have a significant record pushing back on the ICC,” Stefanik said in her confirmation hearing to become U.S. ambassador to the U.N. She told Lee that she is open to assessing his proposal, and that she thinks it is important to ensure that there is no connection between the ICC and U.S. taxpayer dollars.

Stefanik appeared before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee the morning after President Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president.

Stefanik, a loyal Trump ally, is chair of the House Republican Conference, and was the youngest woman ever elected to Congress when she won her seat in 2014. While she has little foreign policy experience, Stefanik has been vocal about Israel and its war with Hamas. She has called for a “complete reassessment” of the U.S.’s funding for the U.N.
