0:53Now PlayingSen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., questioned Doug Collins on Tuesday during his confirmation hearing for veterans affairs secretary.
In the hearing before the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, Murray asked whether Collins believed if a woman veteran, who lives in Texas and has gotten pregnant after being raped, would be able to get abortion care at her local VA facility.
Collins said that’s been a “very sensitive” issue within this body.
“We will be looking at that issue when I get in there to confirm that the VA is actually following the law,” he said.
Collins is a colonel and chaplain in the U.S. Air Force Reserve Command who was stationed in Iraq in 2008. The former lawmaker, who is also a lawyer, was one of President Donald Trump’s defenders in his first impeachment case during his first term. During his time in Congress, Collins did not serve on House Veterans Affairs Committee.
