3:50Now PlayingRep. Seth Magaziner, D-R.I., asked Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin in a House Committee on Homeland Security hearing Wednesday whether he’d direct immigration enforcement officers to avoid carrying out their operations in sensitive locations, such as churches, schools and courthouses.
Mullin said DHS agents are “not actively patrolling or enforcing in sensitive areas.”
“However, we do serve warrants in those areas, and these are going after the worst of the worst,” he added.
Magaziner said there were recent arrests in California and New York where neither of the individuals were charged with any crimes or were associated with any final removal orders. He asked Mullin if there was a written directive “so that everyone working under you is clear on the policy.”
Mullin said there may already be one, but he’d look into it.
Funding for immigration enforcement under Mullin’s department has been lately held up by Republican senators who opposed a Trump administration “anti-weaponization fund.” On Tuesday, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said the fund was being abandoned.
Mullin faced senators on Tuesday in his first congressional hearing since his confirmation to Trump’s Cabinet. The former Oklahoma lawmaker was questioned on his fledgling leadership of the agency, including his threats to remove Customs and Border Protection officers from airports in locations considered "sanctuary cities" by the Trump administration.
