1:49Now PlayingRep. Shri Thanedar, D-Mich., told Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin he was “very concerned that your department is promoting white nationalist, anti-immigrant sentiments on official social media accounts.”
Thanedar described a DHS post quoting “a song embraced by neo-Nazis.”
“When will you stop DHS from using its social media accounts to spread bigoted and racist words and imagery promoting 'great replacement theory'?” Thanedar asked Mullin.
Mullin pushed back against Thanedar’s characterization, saying the lawmaker gave no facts, and pointed to the Democrats' endorsement of Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner. Platner had a tattoo recognized as a Nazi symbol that he has since covered.
Thanedar cited a threat bulletin from the Colorado Information Analysis Center that said white supremacists and violent extremists could attempt to join Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s based on the agency’s social media content that mirrors “popular white supremacist rhetoric and imagery.”
Mullin faced senators on Tuesday in his first congressional hearing since his confirmation to Trump’s Cabinet. The former Oklahoma lawmaker was questioned on his fledgling leadership of the agency, including his threats to remove Customs and Border Protection officers from airports in locations considered "sanctuary cities" by the Trump administration.
