According To MTV Decoded, If You Ignore Race By Being Colorblind, You're A Racist!

Franchesca Ramsey of MTV Decoded has produced a video entitled "Why Color Blindness Will Not End Racism." In the video, she basically says that simply ignoring race or being "color blind" will not solve the issue of racism. She goes on to say that race isn't really...real. That it's a social construct not much different than money. Even though she says race is not a real thing, racism is. Miss Ramsey also likened ignoring race to ignoring a cavity and waiting for teeth to fall out. Her central point is that race must be talked about in order to fix it, with the end game being more *laws* in an concerted effort to end it. I found the talk to be entertaining while also disheartening...and somewhat scary.

First of all, if race isn't real, then why does racism exist? That doesn't make much sense. If there were no differences between races other than skin color, then racism would no different than wearing a blue polo shirt vs a green polo shirt. The same shirt in different colors is not really different. Different types of people that are easily identified by different colors is a completely different thing. An animal of a different color (pardon the pun.)

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said it himself. Judge everyone on the content of their character rather than the color of their skin. A person cannot be automatically pre judged for a set of very specific behavior before the person who is judging them meets them. However, there are certain *general* group characteristics that each race exhibits that can give a person a general idea of how a person will behave before a person meets them. That, of course, is prejudice, but we all do it.

To bring it all home and to make a long story short, the only way to solve "racism" is for each individual person to be the best person they can be. Sweeping generalizations, however right or wrong they may be ethically or logically, won't be made if everyone was on the same page and acted appropriately. Or even if people are still naturally different, proper behavior would prevent improper prejudgement of people, thus creating a more cohesive and peaceful society in the end.
