Oscars RECAP: Best Picture Award Disaster, #OscarsSoWhite Concludes, Jimmy Kimmel's Dry Performance

The 2017 Oscar Awards hosted by Jimmy Kimmel were pretty boring throughout, but featured a wild moment at the very end with a giant screw up when it came time to read the winner for “Best Picture” winner. Of course, the Best Picture award is the award of the night. The final one presented. The one with the most weight. The one that the entire year of movies and entire night of the actual award show leads up to. Not only is that award very important, but so are all of the other awards. So much so that PriceWaterhouse Coopers - one of the most well known and trusted accounting firms in the world - is in charge of the entire process. The Academy casts their votes in secret to PwC, PwC then tabulates the voting totals and places the results in sealed envelopes. The envelopes arrive to the Oscar Awards ceremony in briefcases that are always in the possession of two individuals who have identical envelopes and cards in their respective cases.

The extensive and arguably over-the-top fashion in which the envelopes and cards are handled is to prevent any type of on-stage mishap. It had been a successful plan without any hitches at all until the final moment where Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty were on stage ready to reveal the winner for Best Picture. Unbeknownst to Mr. Beatty, he was holding the incorrect card, which was a duplicate of the “Best Supporting Actress” card that had already been handed out earlier. He opens it with confusion and opines over it for a while. Not very long, but long enough for the crowd to notice. Faye Dunaway seems to be growing a little impatient as she doesn’t know what’s going on. So he hands the card to her and she belts out “Lala Land” as the winner of Best Picture.

Shortly after the cast and crew from Lala Land were on stage and had begun their acceptance speeches, the stage starts to have semi-chaotic activity. Reps from PwC were on stage and it was revealed that Moonlight on the award instead. The respective casts and crew handled the situation well.

Unfortunately, the on-stage brouhaha was the highlight of an otherwise boring night. Jimmy Kimmel is a decent late-night talk show host, but an entertaining Oscar Awards show host he is not. It was a very boring show featuring a few mild jabs at President Donald Trump - including one where Kimmel’s phone screen was shown on a large screen when he decided to tweet at Donald Trump live. The Oscar awards also suffered “bigly” in a ratings dip. Their largest since 2008.
