7:15Now PlayingPresident Trump said Tuesday he is “not happy” with the tentative deal congressional negotiators have worked out on the border security (border wall), as they face a Friday February 15th, 2019 deadline to avert a second government shutdown. But while the president expressed his displeasure at what was agreed to by lawmakers on Monday night, he added that he does not believe there will be another shutdown in the end.
The deal on the table for Trump to sign off on includes $1.375 billion for “border security” that may be used to build a barrier. Which is much lower than his stated $5 billion, and even lower than the reported $5.7 billion actual number. One thing to mention is there is around $900 million from DHS funds to combat drugs coming across the border that may be spent at the Trump administration’s discretion. Also, the deal as it stands today would expire in September. So this may just be round one of more to fully fund the wall.
$5.7 billion may just be a number Trump used as a negotiation tactic that was not the actual amount of cash needed. Maybe somewhere in the middle - around $2.5 or $3 billion - would be appropriate. There is also still the ability of Trump to declare a state of emergency of the cash asked for in the bill is not enough to fund the wall. Also, some money was allocated last year that is being used to fund a border wall construction in the next few days in the Rio Grande Valley at the southernmost point of Texas.
Either way it goes, the wall will be built, regardless if it is delayed by the left or labeled as a different thing.
