By the time it was finished in 1710, St Paul's Cathedral was already blackened by soot from the coal fires of London, and two and a half centuries of pollution and pigeon poo only made matters worse. Julian Pettifer reports on the careful wash-and-brush-up being given to London's most famous building. Never before has St Paul's looked quite as it does today.
