The Englishman's dream of a pleasant old age is no longer one of roses round a cottage door in Devon; it is more likely to be geraniums round a Mediterranean balcony. He wants a little place where the taxes are low and living is easy and the sun is always shining.
A vast industry has grown up to make this dream come true, an industry which has grown fat selling plots of sunshine all the way from Greece to the Caribbean. And every year when retirement day arrives thousands of ordinary British people sell up their homes in Britain and head for the sun to live in a foreign land. They are looking for a warmer, brighter, happier life. Do they find it? What is the price they have to pay?
