Dame Emily Thornberry has said former senior Foreign Office civil servant Sir Olly Robbins was “wrong” to approve security clearance for Lord Mandelson after he failed the vetting process to be appointed US ambassador.

When asked on Radio 4’s World At One if it was right that Sir Olly was sacked, Dame Emily, chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee who questioned Sir Olly today, said she remained “concerned” about how the situation was handled.

She also said it was “unforgivable” that there had been an attempt by No 10 to get former head of communications Matthew Doyle a diplomatic role.

Listen to the World At One on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Sounds.
